| INSTITUTIONAL CARE, NURSING HOME ABUSE AND
ELDERLY NEGLECT INVESTIGATION |
Elderly abuse is more prevalent not only
in elderly care institutions but also in
the private homes and apartments of the elderly.
If you observe abuse,
neglect, or lack
of
care, report the
situation to your
local
social services and
police department.
Even
if you are only suspicious,
do not hesitate
to notify authorities.
Many elderly patients
fail to disclose their
abuse and are ashamed
or intimidated by their
family members and
caregivers. There are
several signs of
abuse:
- Failure to provide nutrition
- Failure to assist in personal hygiene when
needed
- Over and under medication
- Failure to answer to call lights
- Failure to reasonably arrange precautions
to prevent falls
- Failure to turn bed patients allowing bedsores
to develop
- Failure to take patients to the toilet and
leaving them in
soiled beds &
garments
- Slapping and other physical abuse
- Using chemical or physical restraints when
use is not justified
- Verbal and emotional abuse
- Retaliation for filing a complaint or grievance
- Failure to provide medical care when it would
be appropriate
- Sexual contact or rape of patient
- Theft of patient’s personal property and
money
- Taunting or threatening the patient
This list is only a partial documentation
of the negligence that can involve a patient.
We conduct a thorough investigation interviewing
present and former RN’s, physicians, contract
maintenance personnel, food and drug suppliers.
We contact all Police Departments, and 911
together with Local, State and Federal agencies
to determine incidents that might indicate
abuse.
We determine if the Caregiver’s Security
and Fire Evacuation plans are adequate and
functional. We look for obstacles and hazards
that could be dangerous to a patient. Other
patients are interviewed for information
that might disclose abuse. Our investigation
is conducted with the same amount of effort
as if I was investigation my parents and
loved ones.
All consultations with our clients are free,
before, during , and after the investigation.
This investigative specialty is very rewarding
when you can put the client into a peaceful
frame of mind or go an extra mile and collect
evidence against the abuser. If you are living
out of the State of Colorado and you have
a valid concern for a member of your family,
residing in Colorado, we will arrange for
County Social Services and State Agencies
to check on your family member at no charge.
